Marketwatch:  Apple is also scheduled to report its latest earnings. The company is forecast to post fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $5.41 a share, up from $3.67 a share in the same period a year ago, according to a survey of analysts conducted by FactSet Research. Revenue is expected to surge 55% to $24.3 billion stemming in part from strong sales for the iPhone and iPad over the holiday period.  

BP PLC /quotes/comstock/13*!bp/quotes/nls/bp (BP 49.25, 0.00, 0.00%)  said late Friday it’s swapping 5% of its stock for a 9.5% stake in Russia’s Rosneft. The deal will allow the companies to jointly drill in the Arctic Ocean, where Rosneft controls three licenses that cover 125,000 square kilometers on the Russian Arctic continental shelf. BP, Rosneft to swap nearly $8 billion in stock.  Citigroup /quotes/comstock/13*!c/quotes/nls/c (C 5.13, 0.00, 0.00%)   will report fourth-quarter results, with analysts polled by FactSet Research looking for, on average, earnings of 8 cents a share on revenue of $20.57 billion. Separately, the Treasury Department said Friday it will sell warrants it received as part of the capital purchase program and the targeted investment program, including warrants for Citigroup. Apart from the warrants, Treasury has sold all other securities issued to it by Citigroup.

The Nasdaq Composite Index /quotes/comstock/10y!i:comp (COMP 2,739, +1.24, +0.05%)  was down about 2 points, or 0.1%, to 2,732. The Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index /quotes/comstock/15*!mu/quotes/nls/mu (MU 9.71, +0.37, +3.94%)  and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index /quotes/comstock/10y!i:sox (SOX 439.23, -0.78, -0.18%)  were each down a fraction.  On the positive side, Micron Technology /quotes/comstock/15*!mu/quotes/nls/mu (MU 9.71, +0.37, +3.94%)  was up 4.4% after Sterne Agee upgraded the memory chip maker’s stock to buy from neutral.  “We are upgrading Micron to a buy, $12 price target from neutral, as we think DRAM pricing will start to moderate and stabilize over the next couple of months,” Sterne Agee analyst Vijay Rakesh said in a note.

(MarketWatch) — Investors apparently can’t resist believing that the market’s direction around the beginning of the year possesses special clairvoyance.  This strange superstition manifests in any of a number of ways. One, on which I focused this column a week ago, is the belief that “if Santa should fail to call, bears may come to Broad & Wall.”  Another, which began receiving attention over the weekend, is known as the “January First Five Days” indicator — according to which, the stock market has increased odds of rising for the full calendar year in the event it rises during the first five days of January.  That would be good news, since the stock market rose during the first five days of this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/comstock/10w!i:dji/delayed (DJIA 11,687, +49.34, +0.42%)  , for example, rose 0.8% over that period, while the S&P 500 index /quotes/comstock/21z!i1:in\x (SPX 1,274, +4.06, +0.32%)   gained 1.1%.  But I’m not so sure. Consider the data I compiled from the Dow’s history back to 1896, when it was created.
