 U.S. stocks opened higher Friday, extending gains into a fourth straight day, after the government said the U.S. economy grew more rapidly than some expected at the end of last year.  U.S. real gross domestic product increased at a 3.1% annualized rate in the fourth quarter, revised up from the 2.8% pace reported one month ago, according to the Commerce Department.

Upbeat results from business-software giant Oracle Corp. /quotes/comstock/15*!orcl/quotes/nls/orcl (ORCL 33.20, +1.06, +3.30%)  helped lift the technology sector, with materials and technology companies faring best among industry groups on the Standard & Poor’s 500 index /quotes/comstock/21z!i1:in\x (SPX 1,312, +1.85, +0.14%) .  The benchmark averages scaled back on their gains a bit after a consumer-confidence gauge ticked lower in March.

At last check, the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/comstock/10w!i:dji/delayed (DJIA 12,192, +21.04, +0.17%)   rose 24.82 points to 2,195.38. The S&P 500 added 1.73 points to 1,311.39.  The Nasdaq Composite /quotes/comstock/10y!i:comp (COMP 2,742, +5.15, +0.19%)   climbed 6.43 points to 2,742.85.
